Line(s) of the Day #Aeschylus

Aeschylus quote

Aeschylus (525 BC – 456 BC) was a playwright of Ancient Greece. The lines were famously quoted by Presidential candidate Robert Kennedy when telling the audience about the assassination of Martin Luther King.

Film Quiz: Inspirational Women

After seeing Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and Alien Covenant on the same day, I twice saw the trailer for Wonder Woman (and what looks to be the woeful King Arthur: Legend of the Sword). DC will be hoping for success for its empowering heroine to match films within the Marvel Universe. It got me thinking about what other Hollywood females have been inspiring viewers through the decades. How many did you get? Are there others that inspire you?

Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner in the thought-provoking science fiction film Arrival (2016). Based on the short story “Story of Your Life” by Ted Chiang, it tells of a linguistic professor who who is in charge of communicating with beings who have landed from another planet.

Film Quiz: Loners

I haven’t done a film quiz for a long time. After such a long gap there were plenty of categoeis I could have chosen, but as my favourite film of the past few years was Nightcrawler (you can read my review here), it seemed right to chose loners as the theme. There are actually more on screen than you might imagine. Some are harmless, some deadly. Some are charming, some tortured. These are a collection of my favourite photographs from an exhibition of the World Photography Awards in Somerset House, London. This is the tenth edition of the highly acclaimed competition, which includes categories like Natural World, Landscape, Still Life, Sport and Conceptual. There was also a section including the work of photographer and photojournalist Martin Parr.

Gr8at: Klitschko v Joshua

My favourite sports are football and tennis, but boxing has this raw, primal, violent energy that for me just can’t be replicated. So I was glued to the much-anticipated heavyweight fight between the 41 year-old two-time Ukrainian champion Wladimir Klitschko and the sport’s rising star, 27 year-old Londoner Anthony Joshua. The long-awaited fight lived up to the hype, with both fighters sent flying to the canvas in the opening six rounds after ferocious punches. To celebrate the 11-round epic, I’ve used some photographs collected in The Guardian, with an added mixture of Reuters and Getty Images being used (Richard Heathcote, Ben Stansall, Andrew Couldridge, Tom Jenkins)
