One post on the insightful quotes of Oscar Wilde was never going to be enough. Not even close. That’s why the first one was geared to his more wittier quotes and the second part is focused on his more philosophical, more profound quotes. Before you do, here are two extra quotes.
Monthly Archives: October 2018
Line(s) of the Day #IFeelYou
Where heaven waits, those golden gates and back again
You take me to and lead me through oblivion
This is the morning of our love
It’s just the dawning of our love
Taken from the song I Feel You by English artists Depeche Mode, from their studio album Songs of Faith and Devotion (1993). It was the Basildon group’s first album to top both the UK and US charts and is one of my favourites, including Walking in my Shoes and In Your Room. They’re an incredible act and I’ve been fortunate enough to see them live.
Reviews and Other Features: “October Birthdayz” Blogathon
I haven’t been part of a Blogathon for quite a while now. In the past I’ve really enjoyed being part of features like the Back to School, The Top 10 Most Iconic Female Character and Song and Screen series ones, but I have been too busy for any ones recently. However, when Nuwan Sen suggested some flexibility for his October Birthdayz Blogathon I just had to contribute. And I knew just who to choose when selecting someone with a film background and an October birthday. Born on 9 October 1940, Lennon was in films such as Help, A Hard Day’s Night and Yellow Submarine, as well as numerous documentaries released posthumously such as The US v John Lennon. Here are eight of the most memorable quotes from a man who spread peace his whole life.
Things to See: #OnTheWall #MichaelJackson
Perhaps more than any other artist, Michael Jackson’s legacy stretches beyond record sales and number of chart-topping singles and albums. Of course, both are astonishing and barely believable. But more than mere numbers, he was the King of Pop, a global superstar and a musical genius who revolutionised the music video. And as this highly-acclaimed exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery makes clear (neatly titled On the Wall), he was an inspiration even to those far outside of music.
Line(s) of the Day #AViewToAKill
Meeting you with a view to a kill
Face to face in secret places, feel the chill
Nightfall covers me, but you know the plans I’m making
Still overseas, could it be the whole Earth opening wide
A sacred why, a mystery gaping inside.
Taken from the song A View to a Kill by Duran Duran, from the 1982 James Bond film of the same name. As well as just failing to reach number one in the UK, it remains the only song from the franchise to top the US charts. Is it your favourite film from the series? Here are mine.
Gr8at: Funniest Oscar Wilde Quotes
Oscar Wilde needs no introduction, of course. The Irish writer was quite simply, one of the funniest people to have ever lived. One of the all-time great wits. Below are eight of my favourites quotes. How many do you recognise? Do you have a favourite?
Line(s) of the Day #ItsTime
So this is what you meant
When you said that you were spent
And now it’s time to build from the bottom of the pit
Right to the top
Don’t hold back
Taken from the song It’s Time by Imagine Dragons, from their debut album Night Vision (2012). It was the breakout single for the Las Vegas band, who have had continued success with their following two albums.
Line(s) of the Day #TimVine
Actually I did once do a parachute jump. Of course they attach you to the instructor, dont they, and you jump out together. I was in this aeroplane they attach me to this bloke and we jumped out. It was really frightening because half way down he said: “So how long have you been an instructor?”
One of the many, many, jokes by comedian Tim Vine. The genial English stand-up has twice won the award for funniest joke at the Edinburgh Fringe and once held the Guinness World Record for most jokes in one hour.
Line(s) of the Day #WishYouWereHere
How I wish, how I wish you were here
We’re just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl
Taken from the song Wish You Were Here (1975), from Pink Floyd’s album of the same name. I’m a huge fan of the English band and have quoted their songs Comfortably Numb, Learning to Fly and Time, as well as including them in Gr8at Debut Albums and Non-Festive UK Number Ones. I was also able to see Their Mortal Remains, their exhibition at the V&A.
Film Quizzes: Great Foreign Films
I wasn’t planning on doing another film quiz soon after my Magic post, but in the comments section from my Teachers quiz an idea for foreign films was suggested by Leí, whose blog I discovered recently. While most of my quizzes focus on Hollywood, I have always had a fondness for films from different cultures, and even did a Blogathon entitled Foreign Favourites. Below are 15 stills from successful films made in different languages and cultures. How many can you work out? There are countless more I could have included, so feel free to mention any you’re especially fond of.
