Cause it’s a bittersweet symphony this life
The opening lines of Bitter Sweet Symphony by The Verve, taken from their masterful third studio album Urban Hymns (1997). Starting with a gorgeous orchestra sound, it was a huge smash and one of the defining Britpop songs of the 1990s.
I always think this is the best song in a category which should be titled “songs which sound soaring, positve and beautiful, but the lyrics are bleak as heck!” ๐
Indeed. And it’s a pretty angry video too. A superb album. I’ve been listening to it a lot recently.
Great song!
It really is. That whole album is superb. You’ll struggle to find a song sadder than the The Drugs Don’t Work and Lucky Man is gorgeously relaxing. Velvet Morning and Sonnet are standouts too.
Oh I’ll have to explore the rest of this album now. Thank you Alex. I love finding new favorites!
That’s a great attitude to have ๐
You have good taste Alex, so it’s a safe bet. ๐ Take good care
I hadnโt heard of this one before but already added it to my playlist because – ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐
That’s great!
It always cracks me up in the music video how the guy’s just walking down the street and slamming people out of the way. ๐
It’s one of the most famous of the era for sure. Not seen another video like it.
I’m staying away from angry right now. I deliberately expose myself to inspirational material to help me stay happy in heart. There is just too much anger in the world today to add to it.
It’s always good to be positive. In this case, the song has a cynical tone and lyrics so it’s fitting that the video reflects that sense of frustration.
