As long as there have been big-screen budgets, there have been big screen flops. And when a film does bomb at the box office, it leads to all kinds of consequences for the studio, cast, crew, the franchise and even the genre itself. How many of the recent films below can you recognise? Any you feel don’t deserve to be on that list?

10/12 – tripped up by damn Pluto Nash and Hugo. 😉
Hugo an odd choice for Martin Scorcese. But apparently it wasn’t too bad. Pluto Nash was just pure bad by the sound of it.
4 and not sad about it
To be honest most of these films have shocking reviews. Gigli was actually promoted by one network as being so bad you know you’ll want to see it. When you read the plot it’s bewildering how it ever got the green light.
50%. Better than I expected.
With a quiz like this, that’s both glass half full and half empty ha. Saying that, any of these you’ve seen that you thought wasn’t that bad?
I have 10/12 as well–tripped up on The Alamo and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.
The King Arthur film was what inspired a lot of the articles I read. So many bad decisions made. Not just on the film itself, but on the marketing side.
None by pictures. Haven’t seen any of them! Thank heavens.
I’m sure one or two of them aren’t so bad, but yes, there are some abysmal entries here from what the critics say.
Missed Pluto Nash, Hart’s War, and Hugo. I didn’t know Hugo was a flop. I thought it was a fantastic film adaptation of the book.😕
Hugo and John Wick were said to be quite good. It isn’t always the case that because a film does badly with gate receipts that it’s poor. John Wick wasn’t helped by it’s title.
Probably just Hugo. I did like that one The only other film I’ve seen on this list is Fantastic Four and we don’t talk about that one. 😛
The first and second rule about The Fantastic Four is that we don’t talk about it.
Two-thirds ain’t bad! Missed Harts War, Pluto, Sahara and The Alamo
That is a high score for this particular quiz. Sahara really was part one of Matthew Mcconaghey’s career. Part two started after Failure to Launch I think.
John Carter was a flop but it was entertaining 🙂
I am curious to see it.
The only one of these that I’ve seen is Hugo and I actually enjoyed it 🙂
That does seem to be the consensus. Why do you think it did badly?
I had a hard time with this quiz, I only got 7 out of 12.
It was a tough quiz don’t worry. It’s not such a bad score.
Thank you 🙂
Got all 12. I can’t believe Hugo flopped. I thought it was a great movie.
That’s super impressive.
8/12 – missed 2,3,7, and 9
Hugo is the one that shouldnt be on this list 🙂
What’s interesting about the list is that some films shouldn’t be on there. And some, like Pixels and The Vow which got atrocious reviews, make a neat profit.
Quite true!
9/12. Missed the three I haven’t seen.
Solid scoring as per usual Wendell
None. Which is how it should be 🙂
I like to mix things up in my quizzes. Have a great weekend Derrick 🙂
🙂
Missed one – The Alamo. I loved Hugo. Made my Top 10 that year. So sad it didn’t get the reception it deserved.
Why do you think it didn’t get the recognition it deserved?
Good question. It was well received by critics and well represented at the Oscars. I think it was such a unique movie and some people didn’t know what to make of it. Also opening up against Twilight: Breaking Dawn 1 and The Muppets didn’t help.
9/12 didn’t get Alamo which is funny because I’ve seen most of it 🙂 Didn’t get Sahara ( I guessed Fool’s Gold which is also funny because I’ve seen Sahara but not Foot’s Gold) and I guessed 7 Ronin but its actually 47 Ronin. I was surprised to see that Hugo was a flop, it did alright with Oscar nominations and how much did it actually cost? Fascinating. Thanks as always for a great post.

Oh and this one http://www.boxofficeflops.com/yearly-breakdowns/2011-2/hugo/
8/12 – one of my better ones for sure. Never knew that Hugo was a box office flop. That movie is fantastic 🙂
The link above helps explain it. The critics did love it, but sometimes that doesn’t equate to box office success.
I got six but I think in this situation it was a good thing 🙂 I can never have the time back I wasted on 47 Ronin!
14% on Rotten Tomatoes 😮
7/12. Glad to say I have seen very few of these.
I know you’re going to do better next one. Comfortably double figures. Category I think you’ll enjoy.
Hugo – a flop? That’s big news to me. I hated Hugo, but I thought I was the only one, and even wanted to do an unpopular opinion post about it, lol. The only one I feel sad about is 47 Ronin (2013). I know it is based on a Japanese legend (based on historical facts), which is quite fascinating, and there is Keanu Reeves in there. Surely, there could have done something better considering the importance of the story.
One of the links above explains how it ended up being a financial disappointment, and with some fallout. 47 Ronin sadly isn’t the first film to let an important story down.
I really liked John Carter and the 47 Ronin
It just goes to show that though a film did badly at the box office does not mean it is a bad movie.
