They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
Taken from the incredibly poignant poem For the Fallen by English poet Lawrence Binyon (1869 – 1943). Published in 1914, it is quoted on British memorial services for World War 1, as well as several other countries such as New Zealand and Australia. It seemed fitting to quote it here today, as it is 100 years today since the start of the infamous Battle of the Somme, where over one million men were wounded or killed.
A fitting reminder on an infamous day.
I was always aware of it since high school. Just a brutal bloodbath and very sad. The words are incredibly powerful. And we will always remember them.
Yes, Alex. I’ve been thinking and writing about the war. My great grandfathers were soldiers in the First World War. The Somme was horrific
Your great grandfathers would be so proud of you writing.
Thank you, Alex. I hope so!
Gone but never forgotten…
We’ll always be grateful.
Beautiful words for important sentiments.
Thanks. There are other lines in the poem but these just resonate so much. So moving.
Amen Alex.
