These violent delights have violent ends
And in their triump die, like fire and powder
Which, as they kiss, consume.
As spoken by Friar Lawrence in the eternally iconic play Romeo and Juliet (1597) by William Shakespeare.

Sigh, it never gets old. I love this story so much.
It’s the ultimate love story. Won’t ever be topped. Are you a big fan of Shakespeare in general?
Oohhhhh, yes yes, of course! I fail to understand how anyone could not be.
I know. My favourite play is this one. It’s astonishing live. Arguably my favourite quote too. https://alexraphael.wordpress.com/2014/02/11/lines-of-the-day-macbeth/
I’m guilty of not liking Macbeth as much but maybe that’s because I haven’t seen it live yet!
You’d love it. I’ve always preferred his darker stuff.
I’ll have to give it another shot
Nice classic quote!
It is 🙂 Is it your favourite Shakespeare quote?
Man, I wish I knew Shakespeare well enough to have a favourite quote! I think Macbeth is my favourite play though, so anything from that classy but nasty Lady Macbeth would have to be a favourite!
Lady Macbeth is great. My favourite quote from Macbeth isn’t actually by her though ha! https://alexraphael.wordpress.com/2014/02/11/lines-of-the-day-macbeth/
Hmm… that is a good one!
Next time I’m pretending I wrote it myself 😉
“These violent delights have violent ends” This line says it all. Great quote.
It really does. You just know it’s not going to be a happy ending…
This is one of my favourite snippets of Shakespeare and actually makes it into my novel! haha! 🙂
What’s the context? 🙂
The artist – one of the main characters – entitles one of his paintings “Kiss, consume”. It all ties in with the plot… I hope!
Having read your blog, I have no doubt it does 🙂
Thank you 🙂
Very powerful! I love this play, I watched it in live theatre a few times with modern twists. Nobody like Shakespeare I tell ya
Modern twists? How so? I’m guessing they didn’t change the ending haha.
No no! They just changed the dialogue
Phew!
I was fortunate enough to study Romeo and Juliet on two different occasions and I simply love the story along with Shakespeare’s words.
Just the once for me. I did get a lot out of it. I’ve always preferred his tragic drama to his comedy.
