“Some game. If you get on the side where all the hot-shots are, then it’s a game, all right – I’ll admit that. But if you get on the other side, where there aren’t any hot-shots, then what’s a game about it? Nothing. No game.”
The rebellious, lost soul that is Hayden Caulfield in the seminal book Catcher in the Rye (1951) by JD Salinger, which has sold over 65 million copies to date.
Brilliant!
There were plenty of quotes to choose from! When did you first read it?
Oh man, when I was about 17! Haven’t read it since just on case it has aged badly. Or I have aged badly 🙂
It hasn’t 🙂 I read it when I was 15 and liked it. But I read it again about 6 or 7 years later and loved it.
Fab. Might reread it. If I can find it!
I hope you do. Usually I reread just because I love the book so much, but this was the one exception as I was curious why it impacted on so many others.
You’re all phonies! 🙂
Hayden sure hated that word, didn’t he? I can’t think of that word phoney without thinking of him.
I’m the same why. Also go to him right away.
So good. “I like it when somebody gets excited about something. It’s nice.” Simple yet so true.
Very true 🙂 Have you ever read another character anything like Hayden Caulfield?
True!
An awful lot of the book is 🙂
Holden Caulfield is the man!
“That’s all I’d do all day. I’d just be the catcher in the rye and all. I know it’s crazy, but that’s the only thing I’d really like to be.”
That Avatar looks awful familiar 🙂 One of the rare books that has been a phenomenal success without being made into a recognised film.
Your post inspired me to update it!
🙂
Holden Caulfield is one of my favourite ever protagonists. I know that’s not original, but it’s true! Mainly I just liked him because he struck me as a kind hearted kid, who couldn’t understand the unkindness of the world.
Excellent post!
You’re original enough as it is 🙂 It’s a book that connected with a lot of people. A timeless book and an unforgettable protagonist.
Phew! I thought I might sound like a phoney 🙂
P.S what wise words they were, perfect in fact!
“It’s a book that connected with a lot of people. A timeless book and an unforgettable protagonist.” – lovely 🙂
Why thank you Emma 🙂
All true 🙂
