Xander: I saw what you did last night.
Dawn Summers: Yeah, I… I guess I kinda lost my head when I thought I was the Slayer.
Xander: You thought you were all special. Miss Sunnydale 2003. And the minute you found out you weren’t, you handed the crown to Amanda without a moment’s pause. You gave her your power.
Dawn Summers: The power wasn’t mine.
Xander: They’ll never know how tough it is, Dawnie. To be the one who isn’t chosen. To live so near to the spotlight and never step in it. But I know. I see more than anybody realises because nobody’s watching me. I saw you last night. I see you working here today. You’re not special. You’re extraordinary.
(SPOILERS WITHIN COMMENTS) Nicholas Brendon and Michelle Trachtenberg in the supernatural comedy drama Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997 – 2003). Despite it’s huge success, enduring nature, inspirational message and influences on later shows, the show garnered only two Emmys, for make up and sound.
I love this exchange, so touching.
I finished it all yesterday and there was no way I was going to put anything else first. I’ll be putting other lines up from the show later but this quote is still my favourite. It just says so much about bravery not always being linked to the obvious action and how we don’t always notice how courageous people around us can be.
I love Buffy so much. Everything about the show is great.
I discussed it a lot in your series feature, but I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a better acted episode than the episode when Buffy’s mother dies. Or a more creatively one for Hush. Or thought-provoking when they discuss whether is it all a fantasy. Just two Emmys in seven years! And nothing for writing, directing or acting!
IT deserved so many awards. The Body and Hush are my two favourite episodes. But every episode has something special to it.
I might well do a Gr8at episodes. And you can guarantee those two will be on there 🙂
That’s a great idea Alex, I’d dig that.
I love Buffy. Such a big part of my late teens/early 20s.
Such an amazing show. What storyline shocked you the most? Do you have a favourite character? Please tell me you didn’t like Riley!
BUFFY!!!!! I need to go back and watch it all again
You’d love it. It’s been awesome watching all the episodes. So many shocks and surprises throughout.
It’s been so long since I’ve watched it that it would feel like the first time probably
Even better 🙂
You chose a great quote to start with Alex! 🙂 I have so many favourite quotes, but this one is so beautiful.
I knew as soon as I’d heard it that it was going to be the first one. It just sums up the warmth and affection that exists between the characters. I so thought she was going to be a Potential. I’m trying to think of my most shocking moments. Dawn’s introduction as a sister. Buffy’s mum, Tara and Buffy’s sacrifice. The gouging. So so many 🙂
Oh Alex. Thank you for reminding me why I loved this show, and Xander so much! Pfft to the Emmys!
I know. Just ahead of its time really. Did you have a favourite episode? Did Buffy make you laugh more or Xander?
I’ve got so many favorites, but two that really stand out for me are Hush, and Once More With Feeling. I think as far as laughs go, Xander edges out Buffy with his wry, self-deprecating humor.
Great shouts. I think Husg is one of the best things I’ve ever seen on TV. Having a musical was such an original idea too. Earshot was amazing too, and Normal, where they discuss whether it’s all in Buffy’s head are up there too. It’s going to be hard to choose just eight!
Would you believe I’ve never seen one episode of this?!
It’s a brilliant show. I think you’d love it 🙂
I miss Buffy !!
Such a fantastic show. I think I shall have Angel next. I never saw it and now seems as good a time as any.
Seeing as you like supernatural stuff, you should check out Charmed. It’s one of my favourite shows.
Angel’s probably next, but yep, I remember you being a big fan of Charmed so would be worth trying to see.
If you get around to viewing Charmed, be sure to let me know your opinions on it.
Will do.
Cheers Alex.

Ah, good times! I loved watching Buffy growing up. Thanks for sharing these lines, Alex!
Happy to help. There’ll be plenty more going up.
