After posting Closely Watched Trains by BeetleyPete for my Foreign Favourites series, I thought why not do a themed quiz on films fully or predominantly set on trains. This one may be trickier than usual, as the films stretch back to the 1930s and cover quite a few different genres. Do you have a favourite among the six films below? Any others you re fond of that you think could have been included?
Answers below
1. The Lady Vanishes (1938)
2. Strangers on a Train (1951)
3. Murder on the Orient Express (1974)
4. Throw Momma from the Train (1987)
5. Before Sunrise (1995)
6. The Taking of Pelham 123 (2009)
How about ‘Silver Streak’? Daft, but fun!
I remember that film too. if this had been a Top 10 that would have been in.
I got one. 🙂
Strangers on a Train? It was a tough quiz for sure. I don’t think anyone will get higher than 4.
Murder on the Orient Express
I bombed this one only 2 out of 6.
Don’t worry about it. This is one of the tougher quizzes.
Was still fun!
I only knew no.2 !!!!
Amazing film. What a fantastic premise. Throw Momma from the Train sort of used that logic too.
Really? It sounds very different LOL!
Well they reference it in the film. It’s a LOT less glamorous though.
Hee hee! I bet 🙂
Got all these! Ha – love that number four is in there. 🙂
I’ve been watching loads of Sunny in Philadelphia so Danny De Vito is the man. And you are on fire! http://33.media.tumblr.com/582aaf9ca0e5761c5e021b0db196f94e/tumblr_msm6cvQBKS1swp8pwo1_500.gif
Hmm – I’ve watched a few episodes of that but not gotten to the ones with De Vito yet.
This was a tough one, but I got the first 3! 😊
That’s a good score for a tough quiz 🙂 Strangers on a Train is wonderful. It also led to a very funny Modern Family episode.
One of my favorite movies! And yet another reason for me to someday watch Modern Family. 😊
It’s not as sinister as the film mind you. Two of the characters decide it would be better for the other to give the criticism, as they think it would sound less harsh if said by someone not as close within the family. It doesn’t quite go to plan…
Hahaha
#2 is my favorite of this list!
Have you seen the original version of #6, with Walter Matthau? I love that movie 🙂
The original is one of my all time favorite films! 🙂
Don’t stage a heist with a cold 😀
Classic ending!
Mine too. I wouldn’t be surprised if the original was better. The remake got panned.
Yay, I guessed right on all except for #1 and 4. I haven’t even seen Strangers on a Train but somehow I felt like I have 🙂
I really think you’d love it. It’s got one of the best premises for a film I can think of. Neat score on a tough quiz Ruth 🙂
4/6. Not bad. Coincidentally, the theme for this week’s Thursday Movie Picks is also train movies.
Neat score. I’ll take a look 🙂
5/6. missed the lady vanishes!
the original Taking pf Pelham 1-2-3 is amazing, the remake was just eh.
You’re in a really good vein of form Rob. The Lady Vanishes is a good film, but if we’re talking Hitchcock in the 30s I prefer The 39 Steps.
Haven’t seen that one either
The Lady Vanishes! Missed that one.
I thought that one would stump a few people. This is one of the toughest quizzes I’ve done for a while.
For which I’m glad!
A sad 1 out of 6..haha~!
It was a tough one this week Kim. Very few high scores on this one.
I got 3 but I’ve only actually seen 1!
You’d love Before Sunrise.
5 out of 6.
Really impressive score.
I got one, Taking of Pelham 123. That’s it – embarrassing!
Other films on trains? I love Midnight Meat Train. Such an odd film on so many levels. Snowpiercer? I don’t know that many actually, but it’s an interesting category of films for sure.
I’ve not seen those two. Would you recommend them? Money Train was another one I thought about putting in.I don’t think Jennifer Lopez has done that many films recently.
Midnight Meat Train is a pretty weird horror. Has Bradley Cooper (I think) do some strange things and Vinnie Jones in probably his best work, coincidentally in a non-speaking role!
If it wasn’t for the casting, it could sound like David Lynch had tried horror haha.
Guessed all, except for Throw Momma from the Train & The Taking of Pelham 123 (nor have I seen them).
My favourites – the two Hitchcock’s (including his take on Highsmith), and the Lumet’s take on Christie.
I haven’t seen Before Sunrise, only the sequel, Before Sunset (04′).
I really think you’d love Before Sunrise. It’s actually my favourite of the trilogy.
