With de Niro’s 72nd birthday yesterday, I did a celebratory reblog of one of my first ever features. But one post was never going to be enough for such a film icon, so I’ve added an extra-sized quiz in tribute. To make it slightly trickier, I’ve decided not to include the two films he won an Oscar for to make space for some of his lesser-known films. Where do you rate him among the modern day acting greats? Do you have a favourite performance of his?
Answers below
1. Mean Streets (1973)
2. Taxi Driver (1976)
3. The Deer Hunter (1978)
4. The King of Comedy (1983)
5. Goodfellas (1990)
6. Cape Fear (1991)
7. Heat (1995)
8. Wag the Dog (1997)
9. Flawless (1999)
10. Meet the parents (2000)<
11. Shark Tale (2004)
12. Silver Linings Playbook (2012)
10 out of 11, I missed “Shark Tale.” I loved him in “Casino,” Godfather II” and “Goodfellas.”
Pretty much perfect. I thought that might mess with people’s scores. I haven’t seen Rocky and Bullwinkle but I think he did a voice in that too.
100%! Although, I hated Shark Tales. 😉
Brilliant score! Take a bow 🙂
All I didn’t get were Wag The Dog & Flawless.
Two very different kind of films. Wag the Dog is brilliant satire. Flawless is some of the best acting you’ll ever see, especially if you’re a fan of Seymour Hoffman. It’s a really impressive score 🙂
4 out of 10… Not the best, but not bad, either! Some good films there, too! …I agree though, Shark Tale wasn’t great!
Sort of got left in the dust of Finding Nemo. One of your better score averages Amanda 🙂
I use to be an enormous fan, my screen name use to be “bobbyD”(which is a tad embarrassing).
They’re subtle but for whatever reason I’ve always loved him in Stanley & Iris and Falling in Love.
Not seen either. Sounds like you’d recommend them though. Are there any of his films that you really didn’t like?
Yes:I really didn’t like Hide and Seek. Did you see that one? It was kind of a throwaway movie. I don’t love him in comedy usually but I just remembered Midnight Run, that was a great comedy/adventure movie. I’m scrolling through his filmography now, I feel like I should do a project and re-watch so many of his movies sometime.
Stanley & Iris is a drama about a poor-working class man and woman that meet and Iris (Jane Fonda) realizes that Stanley can’t read(I know it sounds corny but it isn’t!) and Falling In Love is another drama about two married people that meet and, you guessed it, fall in love and begin an affair. Meryl Streep is the love interest. I like the movie because it’s not very judgemental and just tells the story.
I shall have to check these out. Thanks for the great descriptions 🙂
I just hope you don’t watch them and think they’re boring! If so, I apologize ahead=)!
Not at all. It will be interesting to see them both.
Got them all! Wag the Dog was underrated. Shark Tale was silly. Happy Birthday, DeNiro!
It really was. Brilliantly satirical. Has such humour in it too, including this wonderful line https://alexraphael.wordpress.com/2014/06/22/lines-of-the-day-wagthedog/
This is nothing!… They told me I couldn’t remake Moby Dick from the point of view of the whale!” I thought it a great dark comedy.
I cracked up at that line. Just so brilliant.
12/12 woohoo!!
I’m not as shocked as this guy but it is a cool gif 🙂 http://www.sweetsixteencafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Just-Wow.gif
7 for me. Raging Bull remains favourite
It’s a tough film to watch. He really is an odious character. Brilliantly made though. You could learn so much about filmmaking just from that film.
9/12. Haven’t seen the three I missed, though. Great quiz.
Thanks Wendell. I tried to cover a wide range of ages and genres.
9/12! 🙂
Neat score Abbi 🙂
I wish I got a higher score but I only got half right. I guess I have some blindspots in regards to Bobby D’s filmography 😀
Well think of the famous ones not on the list. Godfather 2, Casino, Raging Bull, Once upon a time in America, The Untouchables, Sleepers, Jackie Brown, American Hustle…
10 out of 12! (Missed Wag the Dog and Mean Streets)
Great score Fernando 🙂 I think you’d enjoy both other films too. Wag the Dog is incredibly funny if you get the chance.
I’ll check it out! I’ve actually seen Mean Streets but it was many years ago and it didn’t make much of an impact on me, I guess
I don’t rate it as high as his others, but you can see the talent coming through that was more evident in his later films.
I don’t wanna brag or anything but I knew like all of em! 🙂 he is one of my favourite actors! great post !!
Which roles in particular grabbed you?
Oh, and feel free to brag 🙂 In fact have an incredibly original goal celebration as tribute http://www.cairoscene.com/ArticleImages/a1aa66ef-5cfb-4cee-8e8c-e466a7c11ba7.gif
Ohhh Soooo many!! God Father 2, Analyze this, Silver linking.. he is just amazing!
He really can do comedy.
Heh. . . 4/10 for me. I need more Bobby in my life i think.
I caught a celebrity edition of Mastermind a while back and one of the guests had chosen Robert De Niro as their specialist topic. I remember thinking how tricky as he’s done so many films.
I still haven’t seen Wag the Dog. I only remembered that Dustin Hoffman was in it. I just looked it up on imdb, and what an incredible cast! I’ll have to check that one out.
It’s brilliantly satirical. And Woody Harrelson’s cameo is hilarious.
