I’ve referenced all kinds of artists and genres on my ever-expanding Music page. However, not all songs that I really rate will have lyrics that would fit into an entry for Line(s) of the Day. Below are eight songs that are so superb that I had to create a special post so I could share them with you. Are you a fan of any of the artists mentioned?
I can still remember where I was when I heard this song for the first time. The album is one of my all-time favourites, but this song is still the one that stands out most. Out of context the words won’t grab you, but in the song itself they just seem perfect.
Just close your eyes and float away to this gem by a band that show when you’re in top form you can make anything work. Even making a shipping forecast your lyrics.
There was a time when this song was everywhere. This short track is just one reason why their 2010 Mercury Prize win for the album was so deserved.
This song from the Tron soundtrack shows that not all remakes have to be bad and can sometimes produce something very special.
I’ve already referenced my love of Modest Mouse here, and I’m more than happy to mention them again when a guitar riff is as delightful as this.
Aphex Twin has continually produced instrumental delights, but this one just has such a pure, seemingly innocent sound that it will always stand out to me.
There wasn’t a lyric within the song that I felt would fit into a Line(s) of the Day, but I challenge you to listen to this song without hitting repeat at least twice. The pop music equivalent of eating a doughnut without licking your lips afterwards.
The lyrics may look repetitive on paper, but then again, when love has us under its spell, it sure is hard to get out. A magnificent soundtrack from a fantastic film, but this is still my favourite track of them all.
A great collection of instrumental songs here! thanks for re jogging my memory… Must download some of these!
Please do 🙂 I couldn’t fit all my choices in. I might well do a second part, and one of bands who sing in a language outside of English. What was the last song you listened to? Are you more a shuffle or playlist kind of gal?
Some good stuff – and some new pieces too. I like the Aphex Twin track. Have you listened to anything by PG Lost? They write some great instrumentals!
I probably will do a second set to include bands like Explosions in the Sky and Godspeed you Black Emperor. Thanks for the heads up about PG Lost. Listening to them now and liking it. What a gorgeous cover to Yes I am too 🙂
Alex, cool list. I love Tears for Fears and Modest Mouse.
Glad you liked it. I’ve quoted both bands before, but had to include them again. The first song I ever heard of Modest Mouse was Ocean breathes salty which is probably still my favourite. Dramamine and Float on are right up there too. My TFF song favourite changes all the time. How about you?
I enjoy Fleet Foxes (They sound like Crosby, Stills, and Nash) and Float On is a great classic. I love Foo Fighters…
Great list, Alex. Wonderful mood pieces. We’re very much in agreement regarding the last song posted from Refn’s DRIVE. One of my favorites.
Drive is one of my favourite soundtracks. The TRON remake, Badlands, and Friday Night Lights are up there too.
I put a referral of “Riptide” on a post this summer. It is great, reminiscent of several golden oldies which are “timeless.”
An older instrumentals song which is not Rock and Roll is still a huge favorite of mine: Charlie Daniels Band and the devil’s and the mountain song. Shoot, may have forgotten title. Now, I have the Devil and Daniel Webster court case on my mind. You hopefully will fill in my blanks, Alex. 🙂
My grandies like “Cecelia nd and the Satellite.” I had that on a post which mentions “Cecelia” by S & G. They are different where the old Paul Simon song is being “flip” about love abs sex, while the newer one is talking about old fashioned love and how we choose to adore someone. In it, “I am the satellite and you are the sky” makes me smile. I am not sure this is song would be considered good instrumentals, though. Let me know, Alex.
If you’re anything like me you’ll remember it randomly at 5 in the morning! I’ll try and think of it too.
Guess what? “Devil Went Down to Georgia” was one of the most amazing fiddle songs! I saw them in Tolefo in around 1978 or 79. It felt like rock met country with crashing symphonic proportions, Alex.
Great list!
I Wanna Be Adored is a song I’ve been listening since I was 14! I also like Love Spreads a lot!
I’m also glad that ‘Intro’ is such a played track around stadiums; I remember when they were only famous for Crystalize.
As for Under Your Spell,I was addicted to it together with Real Hero!
I did put some thought into them. I’m glad you liked the choices. Great to see you like The Stone Roses especially. Love Spread is great. Waterfall and So Young are up there for me too.
very nice videos !
Thanks. I wanted a nice mix.
Excellent choices. Especially I Want to be Adored.
So much outrageous talent in that debut album. Manchester sure has produced some brilliant bands.
The XX is amazing
Heart skipped a beat is still my favourite. I can listen to that song on loop so easily.
