It was my absolute pleasure to meet WordPress readers Abbi and her husband Paul for drinks and blog-related chat. Those familiar with Abbi’s blog will know her as funny, entertaining and engaging, and in person she was no different. A very fun few hours. She’s even promised to bring some of her heavenly-sounding mint choc-chip cookies next time. In tribute to meeting my first blogger, I am doing a quiz on films set in South Africa, Abbi’s birthplace and home until she moved to London over 10 years ago. Feel free to suggest any other films set in South Africa that have captured your attention. A special shout-out to South Africans and fab WordPressers Natasha and Nadine too.
The film below was originally in the quiz, instead of Film 6. It was taken out for reasons seen below. You’re more than welcome to answer it all the same.
Answers below
1. Zulu (1964)
2. Cry Freedom (1987)
3. The Power of One (1992)
4. District 9 (2009 – September)
5. Invictus (2009 – December)
6. Chappie (2015)
Original/Bonus: Blood Diamond (2009 – September)
Yay! I got all 6. Blood Diamond isn’t actually set in South Africa though 😛 It was great to meet you 🙂
Thanks for your longer, more explained debate (through WhatsApp) as for why Blood Diamond shouldn’t in fact belong in the list. Was happy to change it.
No problem. I feel a bit like I was being super pernickety! Lol!
Ha! You’re allowed to be. The quiz was in your honour 🙂
Reblogged this on abbiosbiston and commented:
I recently got to meet one of my fellow London based bloggers, Alex Raphael in person for a drink. We had a great time making friends and talking about brownies and he was sweet enough to do this quiz as a little tribute to me. Check it out.
I didn’t get any, although I’ve seen Blood Diamond and District 9–just once apiece.
Thanks. I’ve not seen Blood Diamond but I was led to believe that not all the film takes place in Sierra Leone and that South Africa was more prominently featured. Abbi helpfully pointed out the error, so I’ve changed it for another, more recent, film.
I only go one, Alex! (Zulu) But I also got a lot of pleasure reading that you met a fellow blogger and also from connecting to more awesome WordPressers through this post. Many thanks!
Thanks Ann. Abbi and Paul could not have been sweeter. They really complement each other perfectly. Abbi’s has managed to keep her accent too, and was highly entertaining when telling blogging anecdotes.
Got the last 4 right, haven’t seen the first 3.
What did you think of Invictus?
Thought it was all right. I’m not much of a fan of rugby so I guess the film didn’t connect with me. I did like the performances, however.
Suprised you didn’t have Walk to Freedom! But, I missed Cry Freedom and The Power of One.
I did think about it, but wanted to have a wider mix of films. A good score Cindy 🙂
I got 3 for a change (Including Blood Diamond)
Nice one Derrick 🙂
Damn – only got four including Blood Diamond. I sucked at this one. That’s cool you Abbi got to meet! Sounds like you had a lovely time. 🙂
Yeah she and Paul are lovely. She really has kept her South African accent. You came up too btw. Basically, everyone likes you and you’re always welcome to pop by 🙂
Everyone likes me?! Really????? Lol. 🙂 (I sound 100% American) 🙂
Which part?
Midwest. Most people here think I’m Canadian when I talk.
So cool getting to meet fellow bloggers! Exciting! Less exciting is my performance on this quiz. 2/6, I’m afraid.
Don’t worry, I don’t think many people will be getting maximum marks in this.
3/6 plus the bonus. Should have gotten District 9, but drew a blank. Oh well. Great quiz, again!
Thanks Wendell 🙂 Hope you had a nice weekend.
I love this so much!!! #proudlySouthAfrican
However, I only got 3/6 or 4/7 haha.
It would be amazing to go one day. Btw, what did you think of Leonardo Di Caprio’s accent?
I’m a massive fan of Blood Diamond. One of DiCaprio’s best (and he’s never had a dud in my eyes).
Have I sent you the link to my Leonardo Di Caprio double quiz? Can’t imagine you getting any less than all 12. He really is a superb actor, and always chooses great roles.
I’m not sure Alex, can’t remember if I’ve taken that one! Really looking forward to The Revenant.
In case you haven’t https://alexraphael.wordpress.com/2014/03/03/film-quizzes-leonardo-di-caprio/
I hadn’t! Full marks, obviously. 😉
Thanks. Sure you’ll ace this one too https://alexraphael.wordpress.com/2014/03/07/film-quizzes-leonardo-di-caprio-part-2/
That’s awesome that you and Abbi met up, Alex. What a great post to commemorate that. I only got the last three, plus the bonus one. I’m curious about Cry Freedom now.
She’s just like you’d expect from her blog 🙂 I have no idea what to do for my next quiz actually.
YES! I’m back. 100% Nice one, Alex!
You were never that far away 🙂
Ha! Well last time I did horrible on your quiz! I feel better now.
