With the exciting release of the eagerly anticipated and already highly acclaimed documentary Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck, it’s already been discussed how it compares to previous musical documentaries. Turning things around slightly, I’ve decided to see how well you know your fictional bands. Are you a fan of the genre? Do you prefer it to real documentaries on actual bands? Answers as always below.
Answers below
1. This is Spinal Tap (1984) Band: Spinal Tap
2. The Commitments (1991)
3. That Thing You Do (1996) Band: The Oneders
4. Almost Famous (2000) Band: Stillwater
5. Josie and the Pussycats (2001)
6. Scott Pilgrim vs The World (2010) Band: Sex Bob-omb
I managed ‘The Commitments’ only. I like the biopics of Johnny Cash and Bobby Darin
I keep meaning to put a Johnny Cash song as a Line(s) of the Day. Kevin Spacey is just an incredible actor. And what a collection of films. I’ve just finished seeing him in the first series of House of Cards, and I saw him in a one man show of Clarence Darrow at the Old Vic.
I was amazed at his accurate singing and dancing
Is there anything he can’t do?!
no
Only knew the last two 🙂 Love Scott Pilgrim!!
It is a cult classic. What did you think of Josie and the Pussycats. Not seen it.
And soon you’ll be able to add Jem and the Holograms!
Ha!
I never think I’ll like music-related films, then I end up watching and enjoying them. Almost Famous, Walk the Line etc. Still haven’t seen This is Spinal Tap!
Adam.
This is Spinal Tap is soooo funny. I laughed watching it, but the fact that so much of it was based on actual true events is even more funny. And this line always cracks me up

I laughed at that. Need to see this!
It really is very funny. Really think you’ll love it.
5/6 Only missed the band from That Thing You Do. Never seen it.
A great score Wendell 🙂
Another excellent quiz Alex.
Thanks Vinnie. Wanted a quirky quiz this time around. Do you think you will see the Cobain documentary?
I might see the documentary, I’ve got so many other movies to watch first.
I only got The Commitments, funnily enough I watched the scene where they performed Try a Little Tenderness only yesterday. Over 20 years on, the music from that film still rocks!
The best music does.
Well I got three. Am happy to say I got Spinal Tap and The Commitments but embarrassed to admit the third was Josie and the Pussycats!
Not seen it. Was it a guilty pleasure or worth avoiding?
Latter – big time!
Four out of six. I knew that the third picture was from the movie “That Thing You Do,” but I couldn’t remember the name of the band. I saw “Scott Pilgrim vs The World” but wasn’t that impressed by it, so I am not surprised I didn’t get the answer to number six.
Empire Magazine included it among their greatest 500 films made. And yet no space for Do the Right Thing…
I knew four of those films, Alex, and two of them I LOVE — Spinal Tap and Scott Pilgrim.
This is Spinal Tap has so many funny moments. Which scene cracked you up most?
Difficult to choose, Alex. I love so many scenes in that movie.
I know. I’m between two. The dwarves dancing on stage who are bigger than Stonehenge or when the guitarist can’t get out of his pod.
Those are great!
Woo Hoo! I got a This is Spinal Tap😊 Boo! I flunked all the others😣
There’s a strong argument that you got the best one 🙂
Yay!
I got 1 – Spinal Tap!
Think I prefer the real deal, but Spinal Tap made me think they were real. “lol”
Not just you ha. I think they even ended up touring as a real band too.
An actual 6/6! Yipee!
Great stuff Abbi.
A very cool quiz. I only guessed the title of the last movie. Haven’t seen Scott Pilgrim yet but I recognized the image. And I can’t believe I didn’t recognize Josie & the Pussycats
I’ve not seen Josie… but it does have a quirky premise for sure ha.
