Maybe I didn’t treat you
Quite as good as I should have
Maybe I didn’t love you
Quite as often as I could have
Little things I should have said and done
I just never took the time.
The opening lyrics of the hit single ‘Always on my Mind’ by Elvis Presley (1972). Though originally recorded by Brenda Lee and Glenn McCrae, it is Presley’s version that is considered the definitive version.
I do like the song, its all nice and weepy etc,, especially if you have had a bad day etc and want to feel sorry for yourself.!, But it always sounds to me like the ultimate cop out song (for someone to sing to their someone) when someone suddenly realises they have behaved badly (or like some slob) and hope to sing their way out of trouble (guilt etc). It should come with a warning to listeners, that.people don’t ever change that much even when they have seen the light.!( End of rant)
Ha! But when Elvis sings it, it’s irresistible.
That is the trouble!!!
I always think of Willie Nelson when I hear this. I don’t think I realized the Brenda Lee connection before.
I hadn’t known it before. I do like the cover version by the Pet Shop Boys but that’s a different kind of song.
I always think of Willie also, but poignant words for sure.
Is it your favourite Elvis song?
no, I know this sounds weird, but I’m not a huge Elvis fan. I love his slow songs best though. 🙂
This was a great post filled my heart with memories, Alex!
My favorite song of Elvis’ starts with “Wise men say…” in “I Can’t Help Falling in Love with You.” I think of a boy from 8th grade when I hear that song! Smiles, Robin
That is a lovely song too Robin 🙂
John Lennon said that without Elvis there wouldn’t have been The Beatles so even if I hadn’t loved Elvis’ work, I’d still have loved Elvis.
No arguments here 😀 I love the song the way he sings it.
I know. He left so much music behind and yet nowhere near enough 😦
yes, I love this version, too. Ha, ha. Listening to Pet Shop Boys RIGHT NOW. 🙂
It wasn’t just us two. Last link promise! https://alexraphael.wordpress.com/2013/12/21/gr8at-non-festive-uk-christmas-number-ones/
