As I’ve done a film quiz based on short stories, reviewed a film based on a French play and recently bought a book of August Strindburg, it’s about time I did a quiz based on films that were first seen on stage. There are so many great plays into impressive films that I’ve divided them into two groups. See how many of the black and white films below you can get, with the colour ones coming up soon.
Answers below
1. His Girl Friday (1940)
2. Arsenic and Old Lace (1944)
3. Brief Encounter (1945)
4. A Streetcar Named Desire (1951)
5. Stalag 17 (1953)
6. 12 Angry Men (1957)
Oh wow – I thought I’d suck at this but I got four of them! : )
Well done 🙂 Which 4 were they?
Easier to say the two! Lol. His Girl Friday & Stalag 17. Not seen those. : ) Or Streetcar but knew it anyway.
Arsenic and Old Lace is soooo funny. I love Brief Encounter. I saw an adaptation of 12 Angry Men in The Garrick Theatre recently. Brilliant stuff.
I just saw Brief Encounter for the first time last year. Great film! Not sure if I’ve seen the Arsenic film or not, actually, but know the play & the picture. I should watch that too. : )
I really think you’d like it 🙂
I got five! Everything except Stalag 17. I agree about Arsenic and old lace, its great fun
I want them to change the last line. The only thing wrong with the film. Stalag 17 really is a wonderful film if you get the chance. And last but not least, great score 🙂
I’m excited about 12 angry men. That’s one of my faves.
It was a wonderful show. Superbly acted.
Yes! No gimmicks like today. I hope they stay true to the spirit of the movie.
I got five out of six. I have never seen “Brief Encounter.”
Very good score bud. Brief Encounter is a really moving film that has dated in some ways, but become far more powerful in others.
I knew 12 Angry Men and that’s it!!!! hahaha
I was trying to get which one would be Streetcar but I guessed the second image, not the third to last. Good stuff Alex
Thanks. I know you’ll ace the next one 🙂
I had no idea some of these are plays. I bet I’ll be even more surprised by your color version.
What’s interesting is that a lot of the time the film came soon after the play, and was adapted by the same writer.
5/6 for4 me. Missed His girl Friday.
Stalag 17 and 12 Angry Men are two of my favorite movies!!
Ive never seen Streetcar but was able to recognize it anyway
I watched Intolerable Cruelty. Very entertaining film but it shows how hard it is to get a screwball comedy to perfection. I salute you for the two films you highlight 🙂
Hmm. Well, I got A Streetcar Named Desire! Hahaha.
I’ve never seen it actually.
I haven’t either, but I knew Brando was in it. 🙂

4 and 6. Apparently my knowledge of ’40s and ’50s movies isn’t good. But I already knew that. 🙂
You’ll do better on the colour ones. I’m glad you got the final one. Such an incredible film.
I’ve never, I don’t think, seen it, though it is on the list. (Ditto that for Streetcar Named Desire.) Not sure why I knew either of them, honestly . . .
Oh right. It really is brilliant.
