Line(s) of the Day #TheWire

The Wire

Maurice Levy: You are feeding off the violence and the despair of the drug trade. You are stealing from those who themselves are stealing the lifeblood from our city. You are a parasite who leeches off the culture of drugs…
Omar Little: Just like you, man.
Maurice Levy: Excuse me? What?
Omar Little: I got the shotgun. You got the briefcase. It’s all in the game though, right?

      • It is certainly in the running for greatest drama series. I say Breaking Bad competes for that title, too.

I see so little TV that it’s hard for me to know what else I’d put in the conversation, but The Wire and Breaking Bad are the best I’ve ever seen.

      • I’ve not mentioned Mad men, Breaking bad or Dexter as though I’ve seen a lot of them, not the most recent series of each. I’ll come back to you on it.

      • Dexter’s first season is brilliant. It goes downhill from there until it goes completely off the rails in season 6. Not anywhere near one of the best dramas ever.

I haven’t seen Mad Men (outside of the first two episodes which didn’t grip me). So I have no real opinion on that one. 😉

      • Hmmm. Have seen the first 4 series of Dexter so don’t agree with you so much on that. It doesn’t keep its consistency as well as the first series but I still like it a lot. Mad Men has its qualities but only seen the first 4 series. I do rate it but I need to see where it goes in series 5.

A show that really did go off the rails for me was Six Feet Under. I’d go as far as to say it jumped the shark in series 4.

      • Agreed on Six Feet Under.

And you haven’t hit the worst of Dexter yet. Seasons 2, 3 and 4 are not as good as 1, but all have merits. I think 4 the most flawed of all of them, what with a ridiculous cliffhanger and Jon Lithgow’s one note performance. Still, 4 isn’t bad. Then, it makes a rebound (in my opinion) in 5; I’d go so far as to say 5 is the season best season of the show’s run.

6 & 7, however, are . . . not good. And 8 is so universally disliked that I haven’t bothered to watch it.

      • I tried to get into Ball’s latest with True Blood but not even close to liking it. Great opening credits though.

I do worry that Dexter will turn into X-Files and go on too long but on form I really do rate Dexter so I imagine we’ll have this convo again soon. I’ve given up on Homeland after a very poor series 3.

What current shows are you watching?

      • We will discuss more of Dexter once you have seen seasons 6 and 7. I don’t think I’ve heard from or met a soul who liked either. I’d be quite surprised if you’re first. 🙂

Now that Breaking Bad is finished, Justified is the only show for which I still make time. It hooked me with a Gangstagrass theme song (though at the time I still didn’t know who Gangstagrass was). Bluegrass and hip-hop are my two favorite musical genres, so combining them . . . yeah I’m in.

Justified is very good. Very. But Best Drama Ever? Not even close.

      • I know you cover films more than TV shows, but if you ever have the time on the way to or back from work whatever, I’d be curious if you could do a top 50 TV shows.

      • I don’t honestly know that I’ve seen enough TV to endeavor such a task. Most of the great shows, historically anyway, are Showtime and HBO, neither of which I’ve ever paid to get. I’ve only seen Carnivale, Six Feet Under, Sex and the City, The Wire, and Dexter on DVD. And that is the full extent of my premium channel television show exposure.

(No Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, Homeland, etc.)

Honestly, I think you should put together the Top 50 TV shows list so that I know what to watch. 🙂

      • I’m flattered. I’ve done lists in the past, so only a few to add If i can track them down. Mind you i’ve still not written up the Agassi review or The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

      • It’s a compliment to my readers. I really like your viewpoint and feedback 🙂 I’m never sure what the most popular part of the blog actually is.

      • For me . . . this comments section. We have some fun conversations down here. 🙂

In terms of the features, I like them all, but my favorite? Hmmm. Probably the quizzes.
