George Wensley Bellows was a hugely talented American realist painter who arguably captured better than anyone else the life of the city working classes. He may have died at 42, but his phenomenal way of looking at regular people and the landscape around them, will live on. I saw his retrospective in The Royal Academy last year and not having heard of him earlier, I was utterly mesmorised by his depictions. Here are my favourites.
They’re all good. I especially love the last one.
He was phenomenal. I’m not sure I can pick one. I only left when the cleaning lady kept tripping me up with her mop 😉
Wow, I was not aware of this artist either – thanks for sharing!
My sister invited me along to a double exhibition of him and Édouard Manet, and I’ve been a fan of Bellows ever since. I have the New York one in my room. It reminds me of my trip there.
New York and the Docks.
It’s quite something.
How lovely! The first one is my favourite 🙂
It really captures that side of New York
Wow…that’s amazing! For some reason I LOVE Stag at Sharkey’s painting 🙂
Awesome stuff. It really gets across the brutal beauty in boxing.
It does…the way he captured the moment captivated me…it was the only painting that left me impressed…the rest are beautiful but that one is the best in my opinion. Which one is your favorite?
Choosing just 8 was hard enough haha. The boxing one is astonishing, and the New York one reminds me of my time there, but Snow Capped River has the most incredible use of light and colour so I’d probably have to choose that.
Great choice :). I am going to have to look him up..
Never seen his stuff before – very cool pieces. Perspective really is everything. I love seeing art that emphasizes that!
Exactly. Talent like that is always inspiring.

Wow. These are really amazing. The detail in them is astounding.
I saw most of them in an exhibition in London. Hadn’t heard of him before but been a huge fan ever since.
I must look up more. Thanks for the link to this. I really love these.
Here’s what he looked like if you were curious https://alexraphael.wordpress.com/2014/05/04/lines-of-the-day-georgebellows/
